Milestone 4: Children's Eating: Fast Food Observations and Menu
1. Read chapters 17, 18 and 19 in the textbook.
2. Choose a fast food restaurant to do your research.
3. Go to your restaurant of choice, observe and record children's food choices for at least an hour period.
4. Go to the Fast Food Analysis website at http://www.fatcalories.com/ Locate the nutritional value for the common meals that students ate during the period. You can also go to the individual restaurant's website for additional information as most restaurant chains have nutritional information online. After reviewing the information for that restaurant, decide on the healthiest meal alternative available at that restaurant for young children.
5. Read Chapter 19. Review the information about menu requirements from the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Use the guidelines in the chapter as well as the information gained in previous chapters to develop a menu for a 5 day period including lunch and two snacks.
6. Review your menu - be sure your menu meets the requirements for serving sizes and that the meals provide 1/3 to 1/2 the daily nutrients. Does the food sound appealing? Think about how you can creatively make the food more appealing to students.
7. Create a new page on your wiki and give it the same title as your menu or restaurant. Upload your research and healthy menu onto your wiki.
8. On your wiki, identify the restaurant you did your research. In your submission, tell us what common foods were ordered by the children and what healthier alternatives they could have chosen. Tell us, did more of the children you observed select healthy or unhealthy choices? Evaluate the most popular meals in regards to nutrition, fat, etc. Write your own recommendations for healthy meals at this restaurant.
9. In the class webcourse, click on Assignments and enter the date you completed and uploaded all requirements for this mileston.
